Holiday Closures and Their Impact on Oversize Load Permits

As we approach the holiday season, it’s essential for transportation and logistics companies to plan ahead for holiday closures, especially when it comes to oversize and heavy-haul load permits. At My PEVO, we understand how crucial it is to stay informed about permit office closures and restrictions to ensure smooth operations for your business.

Why Do Holiday Closures Matter?

For companies moving oversize or overweight loads, permits are the lifeblood of operations. These permits are issued by state and local permitting offices, which often operate on limited schedules around major holidays. When these offices close, the ability to secure or amend permits comes to a halt, potentially delaying your shipments.

Moreover, many states enforce travel restrictions during holidays to reduce congestion and ensure safety on the roads. This can further impact your delivery timelines, making it even more important to plan ahead.

What to Expect During the Holidays

  • Permit Office Closures: Most state permit offices will be closed on federally recognized holidays, such as Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Thanksgiving. Some offices may also close early the day before a holiday.

  • Travel Restrictions: Many states impose restrictions on oversize and overweight loads during holiday travel windows. This is especially common during peak traffic times, such as the day before Thanksgiving or the weekend after Christmas.

  • Processing Delays: Even after the holidays, permit offices may face backlogs due to the high volume of requests submitted before and after the closures.

How to Prepare

  1. Plan Ahead for Permits: Submit your permit applications well in advance of any known closures. Keep an eye on state-specific updates regarding holiday schedules.

  2. Communicate with Your Dispatcher: Make sure your team is aware of any upcoming restrictions or closures that may impact your route.

  3. Review Alternate Routes: If holiday restrictions limit travel on certain highways or routes, having an alternative plan can save time and frustration.

  4. Keep Clients Informed: Transparency with your customers is key. Provide them with realistic timelines that factor in potential delays due to holiday closures.
